GIS Map

Privacy Policy

Effective October 5, 2026. GIS Map is a free, public map site with no accounts. This page explains what information is involved when you use it.

Information we collect

GIS Map has no sign-up, login, forms or user accounts, and we do not ask you for any personal information. We do not set advertising or tracking cookies, and we do not sell or share personal information.

Like any website, our hosting servers automatically receive standard technical information with each request, such as your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. This is used only to deliver the site, keep it secure and diagnose errors.

Location and map features

  • Locate button: if you press the locate button on a map, your browser asks for permission to share your location. It is used only within your browser to center the map and is not sent to or stored by us.
  • Drawings and measurements: shapes and measurements you create stay in your browser and disappear when you leave the page.
  • Map inspector: when you click a point on the map, its coordinates are sent from your browser to public government services to look up the county, ZIP, census tract, school district, flood zone and elevation.

Third-party services

To display maps, photos and data, your browser connects directly to the following services, which receive your IP address and the map area being viewed under their own privacy policies:

  • Esri ArcGIS (basemaps, search and map tiles)
  • U.S. Census Bureau TIGERweb, FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer, U.S. Geological Survey (contours, shaded relief, elevation) and MRLC (land cover), when map layers or the inspector are used
  • Wikimedia Commons (city photos)
  • Abacus.AI, which hosts this website

City news headlines are retrieved by our server from Google News; your browser does not contact Google to load them. Clicking a headline takes you to the publisher's site, which has its own privacy policy.

Children

GIS Map is a general-audience reference site and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes

We may update this policy as the site changes. The effective date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised.
